How to choose a right Storage solution for SME?
Before you can decide if Storage Area Networks (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS) is the right technology choice for your organization, it’s helpful to compare the two of them. With SAN or Block Based storage the typical connectivity is either via FC (Fibre Channel) or IP (ISCSI) protocol. With traditional NAS solutions the connectivity method is via IP and utilizes either CIFS (windows) or NFS (unix) protocol to have shared access to the data.
Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
Historically, the standard way of connecting hosts to storage devices has been direct, one-to-one SCSI attachments. As more and more storage and servers are added to meet demands, a DAS environment can cause a proliferation of server and storage islands. This creates a huge management burden for administrators, as well as inefficient utilization of resources. Data sharing in these environments is also severely limited.
The limitations and challenges of DAS are the reason many organizations today have chosen SAN or a combination of SAN and NAS solutions.
The Advantages of SAN over DAS
The most effective SANs provide a wide range of benefits and advantages over DAS, including:
- More effective utilization of storage resources through centralized access
- Simplified, centralized management of storage, reducing administrative workload to save time and money
- Increased flexibility and scalability through any-to-any storage and server connectivity
- Improved throughput performance to shorten data backup and recovery time
- Reduced LAN congestion due to removal of backups from production network
- Higher data availability for business continuance through a resilient network design
- Excellent scalability and investment protection allowing you to easily add more storage as your business needs demand
- Superior security for storage environments
- Non-disruptive business operations when you add or re-deploy storage resources
- Proven short- and long-term return on investment (ROI)
Storage Area Network (SAN)
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
Unlike SANs that utilize a network of Fibre Channel switches, most NAS connections reside between workstation clients and the NAS file-sharing facility. These connections rely on the underlying corporate network infrastructure to function properly, which can lead to network congestion, particularly for larger data transfers. NAS solutions are typically configured as file-serving appliances accessed by workstations and servers through a network protocol such as TCP/IP and applications such as Network File System (NFS) or Common Internet File System (CIFS) for file access.
NAS storage scalability is often limited by the size of the self-contained NAS appliance enclosure. Adding another appliance is relatively easy, but sharing the combined contents is not. Because of these constraints, data backups in NAS environments typically are not centralized, and therefore are limited to direct attached devices (such as dedicated tape drives or libraries) or a network-based strategy where the appliance data is backed up to facilities over a corporate or dedicated LAN. Increasingly, NAS appliances are using SANs to solve problems associated with storage expansion, as well as data backup and recovery.
NAS does work well for organizations needing to deliver file data to multiple clients over a network. Because most NAS requests are for smaller amounts of data, data can be transferred over long distances efficiently.
Your business requirements will help you determine which technology is right for you. Despite their many differences, SAN and NAS can actually complement one another as each are suited for different types of applications. Increasingly, NAS appliances are coming IPSANs feature to solve problems associated with storage expansion, and data backup and recovery, we call Such NAS as Unified NAS.
What is Data Backup and recovery Application and is this important ?
Data backup and recovery Software is always plays a vital role in Data Safety, this automates the process of taking backup of critical data from all End points and servers as per schedule or as real time. This saves huge time of System admin and also ensures accuracy of backup by timely report of all backups happening Successfully. Lots of other beautiful features available in Backup Software like… Encryption , Compression, Archiving , Bare Metal recovery, Dissimmilar Hardware recovery and High Availabiliy etc which made this as compulsory Software in SME’s as well today. Big Corporates and Govt Organisation are already using some Backup Software from Long time.
Now a days lots of Malware attacks happening across world and Ransomware has done huge Data Losses for those who are not using Backup Software and RAID Storage. But who ever has Backup of Critical Data has recovered all their critical data from Backup sets which remains safe in Encrypted form.
How to choose a Right Brand for Storage and Backup?
Always see customers reviews about post Sales Service and see who has Local Service available Directly or through their distributor. We are also doing few Brands as distributor and giving Local India Support to our resellers for those products. Big Brands are always having Good Onsite Support but SME’s may not be having that kind of Budget So best option is to find near Competition to these Market Leaders to get a personalized support and a VIP treatment from these Niche vendors.
In terms of hardware prefer to have inbuilt mini UPS or Battary for Cache and Should have data safety in case of hardware Failure or Firmware corruption.
Whats is your recommendation to our Readers ?
I will not name Brands having worst Service , people are even not having INDIA RMA for their Products and still selling in INDIA based on Marketing. Few have 50% plus Failure rate of RAID storage still they sold their Products as associated with Market Leaders, but Only few Brands are actully doing justice in market. Out of these few we are associated with two good Brands one from USA – Drobo Inc and one from Taiwan is Infortrend. Drobo is most Robust in all offering in Tower offerings even having inbuilt cache Battery in all models and Infortrend is best Enterprise class Storage like Market Leader.
Whether cloud Storage will Replace Physical storage?
Never possible , we are running very fast toward Digital Yug and every Industry is generating huge Data now and surveillance Industry and Archiving Industry will boom as per new Govt Policies and also same time Structured Data requirements will also grow because of boom in Software industry and adoption of ERP’s in All segments. All FLASH storage are already in demand now from Big Coporates and Government in INDIA.All this can be fulfilled using physical Storage devices only.
Actually Cloud Storage can not replace requirement of Physical Storage, this is additional requirements of Enterprises and service providers other than Traditional physical Storage devices.
